Adaya sat gingerly on her stool behind the shop counter. She’d opened at her usual time, but it business was slow. A few customers trickled in, made a few purchases, and then left quickly. Ordinarily, she’d have spent the day after Valentine refreshing her pre-made bouquet supply and putting in orders with her suppliers.
But not today. Today she could hardly move. Her muscles were sore, her hips ached, her body ridden tender, unaccustomed to sex. It’d been too long since the last time. She hurt everywhere, but she couldn’t help smiling.
She inhaled the sweet scents of her flower shop, and then let out a long, contented sigh. She’d hardly slept at all, Braden not leaving until the sun started to rise, and they’d finished off that box of condoms before he’d gone to shower and change because he’d said his team had a tournament. She’d finally fallen asleep at dawn and slept only three hours. But she wasn’t even sleepy, only tender.
Date, booty call, one night stand-- whatever it’d been-- one thing was for sure, it’d been amazing.
The hours passed, the customers entering here and there throughout the day. She’d hardly noticed how slow it’d been, her mind continuing to replay the night before. The gentle touches, the tender strokes, the whispered words. The mind-blowing, body shaking climaxes.
She laughed aloud.
“What’s funny?” A rich voice disturbed her musings.
She glanced toward the door. Braden had entered, wearing slacks again, and a high school coach’s basketball T-shirt. He didn’t seem tired or sore, damn him. She smiled.
She was smiling. On the inside, too. “Hi. How did the tournament go?”
He shrugged. “Won two, lost one. The boys played well.” She could see the pride in his eyes, hear it in his voice.
She wanted someone to have that gleam of pride when they spoke about her. She ached to touch him. “That’s great.”
He nodded.
“What are you doing here?”
“It’s a flower shop, Adaya. I came to get some flowers.” His tone was teasing as he crossed the shop in a few wide strides.
“Oh yeah, who you buying flowers for this time?” She tucked her bottom lip between her teeth and slanted him a narrowed look.
He laughed. “I need something special.”
“For your mama?” Okay, it’d been a booty call, so she shouldn’t feel irritated if she’d gotten exactly what she’d asked for. She had no claim on him. None at all, even though that realization did a funny little thing to her gut and caused a little pang of pain around her chest.
“Nah, not for my mama.”
“What do you want, then?” She had no right to feel angry, but it was there, shimmering just under the surface, her heart throbbing heavily, a knot tightening in her belly.
He smiled, his dimple appearing on his cheek. “Something pretty and special.”
She made a sound, Humph, but she hadn’t meant to. “What type of flowers?” She stood, her muscles revolting. She winced a little.
His dimple deepened. Something shifted in his milk chocolate gaze. “Japanese cherry blossoms. A whole bunch of them.” His tone had dropped, low and deep.
